Maura Higgins LCSW has been working in the mental health field for the past 28 years, most of this time at the Department of Veterans Affairs. She completed her MSW at Boston College in 1994 and her BS at Boston University in Journalism in 1988. She also completed a postgraduate certificate program in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 1995.

 

Maura has extensive experience working with adults ages 18 and over with various challenges including a history of trauma, depression, anxiety, substance abuse and adjustment issues. She is especially interested in working with clients struggling with insomnia. She has advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia and Primary Care Mental Health Integration.

 

Maura’s approach to therapy focuses on the whole person, including their physical, emotional, and spiritual health. She also spends time helping each client articulate their values and what is most important to them. She collaborates with her clients to develop a treatment plan that encompasses specific and meaningful goals. She values the importance of developing positive and meaningful relationships with all her clients, as well as helping each of them develop meaningful and positive relationships outside of therapy.

 

Maura grew up in the greater Chicago area. She lived in Boston for many years but moved to Maine with her family in 2003 where she started working at the VA Maine Health Care System in Augusta. In her free time Maura enjoys playing tennis, travelling and spending time with her husband and two daughters.
